Notes: The 2010 season opens with Romantic Spirits, a program celebrating three strikingly different paths taken by composers in the long Romantic tradition. Frenchman Hector Berlioz (1803–1869) sought the thrills of the extreme with enormous orchestras, new instruments, and epic compositions. To Finland’s Jean Sibelius (1867–1957), the mission was to express personal emotion in grand proportions and to forge some of the last century’s most popular symphonies. For Johannes Brahms (1833–1897), composing music was about finding a new sound while honoring the legacy of the Beethovenian tradition. Each performance begins with Berlioz’ Roman Carnival Overture — a colorful and energetic piece that captures the festive sights and sounds of an Italian carnival scene. Sibelius’ masterful Violin Concerto follows and the RPO will feature one of most sought after young talents on the classical music scene today, violinist Augustin Hadelich. He is the 2009 winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and gold medallist of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Augustin made a sensational debut with the Cleveland Orchestra this past season and he has appeared in Carnegie Hall three times. He holds graduate and artist diplomas from New York’s famed Juilliard School. Brahms’ evocative and optimistic Symphony No. 2 follows after intermission. Many compare Brahms’ second to Beethoven’s sixth because of its cheerful, pastoral melodies.

Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra -- Reno Philharmonic Orchestra in Reno, NV on 10/09/10

Date: Saturday, October 9th 2010

Time: 10:00am

City: Reno, NV

Venue: Pioneer Center

Address: 100 S. Virginia St.

Country: US

Admission: Tickets are $10 and $5 for kids

Age restrictions:

Notes: One of the most well-known orchestral works written especially for the young listener is Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. It begins and ends with an overview of the whole orchestra, sprinkled with demonstrations of each instrument. Kids and their families can go for a joyful romp into Classical music. This multi-media concert is part learning, part entertainment, and all fun. The music will open the ears of new concertgoers — young and old — to all the instruments of the orchestra.

Keyboard Fantasies -- Reno Philharmonic Orchestra in Reno, NV on 10/10/10

Date: Sunday, October 10th 2010

Time: 4:00pm

City: Reno, NV

Venue: Pioneer Center

Address: 100 S. Virginia St.

Country: US

Admission: Tickets start at $28, with disco

Age restrictions:

Notes: Keyboard Fantasies features three virtuoso pianists: two are the composers, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 – 1943) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827), while the third piano “phenom” is Marc Yu, our soloist for the occasion, who will perform Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto. Like Beethoven, Marc began performing piano recitals at age six. At age 11 today, Marc is a rising star in the musical world with countless solo recitals and TV appearances, including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Oprah, and the Ellen DeGeneres Show, to his credit. By age six, he had been the focus of print media worldwide including feature cover stories for both the L.A. Times and The New York Times Magazine. At age seven, he inaugurated Steinway & Sons' Historical Piano Tour, performing on Vladimir Horowitz's piano. He is the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Davidson Institute Fellowship Award. After intermission, listeners will be swept away by the warm harmonies and passionate melodies of Rachmaninoff’s glorious Symphony No. 2 — a work that was an immediate triumph at its 1908 premiere and as a result gave the pianist composer the confidence to continue writing for orchestra.

Notes: Our November MasterClassics concert, features music sublime enough to be called Music for the Gods. We begin with what is typically the end — a perfect symphony. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter” opens the concert. Many consider it to be the pinnacle of the Mozart’s compositional genius. Themes unfold and transform again and again with what seems like effortless beauty. Note that the nickname “Jupiter” refers not to the sixth planet, but rather to symphonies robust Olympian grandeur. “Jupiter” (aka. Zeus) refers to the king of the gods, and indeed this work, which is Mozart’s longest, merits the title. After the Mozart, listeners will be treated to a dazzling display of poetic phrases and technical prowess spun by one of Reno’s finest musical talents: French horn virtuoso John Lenz. The Philharmonic is proud to call John one of its own, as he plays principal horn with the orchestra. For this special occasion, John will step to the front of the stage and take the spotlight in Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 2. John Lenz is a professor of music at the University of Nevada, where he teaches cello, horn, theory, and directs the orchestra. He also serves as principal the Reno Chamber Orchestra and the Great Basin Brass, and is the cellist (and hornist when needed) of the Telluride Chamber Players, and the Argenta Ensemble. The concert will close with Strauss’ dramatic tone poem Tod und Verklärung [Death and Transfiguration], a deeply beautiful piece that depicts a human soul’s blissful transformation at the moment of death into the afterlife. It is music that introduces listeners to divine beauty.

Notes: The New Year begins with a MasterClassics concert of timeless, spiritual music that reaches deep into the past, drawing on ancient musical figures and chant melodies from ancient monasteries, all the while seeming entirely new and fresh. Simply Profound will begin with Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt (b. 1935), honoring the life of a kindred compositional spirit with his hauntingly beautiful canon, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, scored simply for string orchestra and bell. The next work, Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, seems at first to be a saucy, whimsical, and jazzy contrast to Pärt’s eulogy, yet Ravel’s intimate and languid middle movement tells of deeper musings. Guest artist Terrence Wilson is our soloist for the concerto; he has appeared with prestigious ensembles, including the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Washington, DC, San Francisco, St. Louis, Cleveland, Minnesota, and Philadelphia (among others) and has received numerous awards and prizes, such as the SONY ES Award for Musical Excellence, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Juilliard Petschek Award. Terrence is a graduate of The Juilliard School. The English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams completes this eclectic program with his romantic and operatic Symphony No. 5, written during World War Two, but looking back (maybe hopefully) to a simpler, pastoral age.

Notes: The spring concert is one in which we will Discover New Worlds. It is a voyage packed with adventure. First we discover an exceptionally gifted composer, Sean Shepherd, who grew up right here in our midst. This brilliant, young talent from a fourth-generation Nevada family is taking the world by storm and quickly developing an international reputation as a composer. For this concert, Sean is writing a new piece specifically for the Reno Phil. Having grown up in the music programs of the Washoe County public schools, Sean played bassoon in the Phil’s youth orchestra and sees this commission as a chance to celebrate his heritage. The program’s second piece furthers our exploration into new musical universes with the world-class marimba and percussion duo “PercaDu.” The Israeli pair, Adi Morag and Tomer Yariv, seem almost to fly from instrument to instrument as they perform Avner Dorman’s Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! — a concerto for percussion duo and orchestra written specifically for them. PercaDu has generated worldwide interest and enthusiasm through their energetic and intense approach to music making. The concert blasts off to a dramatic close with Gustav Holst’s interstellar masterpiece The Planets, featuring the women of the RPO chorus. A massive orchestra transports the audience with majestic, colorful harmonies as Holst paints sound pictures of the astrological characters of each extraterrestrial body (hence there is no earth). Completed in 1916, The Planets lacks a movement about Pluto (which was not discovered until 1930), so the demotion of this former planet to dwarf status has restored Holst’s masterpiece to completeness.

Notes: The grand finale of the season features two Russian works of epic proportions. Rivalry and Ritual will showcase the fantastic RPO chorus, prepared by Jennifer Tibben, in Prokofiev’s score to the 1938 Russian film Alexander Nevsky, directed by the great Sergei Eisenstein. Experience the suspense of this cinematic history as the young Russian Prince Nevsky leads an army of peasants through battle after battle against advancing Teutonic knights of the 13th-century Holy Roman Empire. Hear the ice crack under the soldiers’ feet in “The Battle of the Ice,” and weep with the young maiden as she searches for her husband-to-be among the wounded and fallen. The second half of the program features the Philharmonic in all its dazzling virtuosity with Igor Stravinsky’s famous Le Sacre du printemps or “Rite of Spring,” originally a ballet but more often performed as a stand-alone orchestral piece. This is a work so exciting and daring that it leaves listeners breathless even today. Although now a repertory classic, its 1913 premiere caused Parisian audiences to riot. Come find out why!
