DrinksBar Review Amendment 21
Reno’s newest Bar, Amendment 21, plays off of the prohibition theme. The walls are covered with high quality cherry wood, which is a remnant of previous tenants. Amendment 21 is in the Bank of America building which was previously occupied by high-end restaurants including Adele’s, Blue Trout, The Chophouse and Spencer’s Steakhouse. Amendment 21 opened in mid-January, and the word is out.
Previous tenants created a high-end, formal atmosphere, but today the place feels more casual. Soprano’s posters and big-screen, free wifi, high-definition TVs deck the walls. Amendment 21 is a sport’s bar with a little extra flair. The bar has two pool tables. When we spoke with the owner, he said he intends to section off the main dining room for bands.
Amendment 21, which is non-smoking, offers tasty bar food. My favorites so far are the Greek pizza, chicken nachos, and the Amendment 21 burger. The venue gets loud as it fills with young professionals and an older crowd. Amendment 21 is going to help connect the California Avenue district to downtown. The next time you go out on the town for drinks, stop in at Amendment 21 and enjoy.
RP Fact: Adopted in 1919, the Constitution’s 18th Amendment banned making or selling alcohol, starting prohibition. This led to organized crime and speakeasys, where people illegally drank at closed-door venues. Amendment 21, adopted in 1933, repealed that amendment, and the entire country started to get their drink on again, without fearing arrest.
