The “green” movement of environmental consciousness continues to spread and grow nationally and now, locally. EcoReno, LLC is pleased to announce the opening of its new retail store. Based in Reno, EcoReno co-owners Marc and Morgan Tiar decided that they needed to help effect change in the world by supplying people with goods to help reduce waste, buy recycled, and live in more sustainable ways.

EcoReno carries a variety of goods including household products, pet supplies, and composting aids, as well as an extensive selection of natural personal care products. The emphasis is on practical items that will reduce waste, encourage conservation, educate, and avoid pollution in the environment. Some examples to be found? Tumbling compost bins, kid’s toys made from recycled plastic, solar backpacks, and books on green living, just to name a few. In coming months, EcoReno plans to host regular lectures and educational programs featuring experts on a variety of ecologic issues. Even the store itself was set up with the environment in mind – it’s centrally located to minimize driving for shoppers, and most of the furnishings and fixtures are repurposed from a previous use elsewhere.

Marc and Morgan are longtime Reno residents and parents, both reasons behind their decision to open this new business in a questionable economic climate. “We love Reno as a place to live and raise our family. On both a local and global level, we wanted to take our own small steps to reduce our impact and preserve the planet for future generations, while encouraging and assisting others to do the same. That’s why we’re doing this.” said Marc.

EcoReno is located in the little green house at 18 Stewart Street, Suite B (around the back) in Reno. For store hours or further information, they can be contacted at 775-GO-ECO or on the web at www.goecoreno.com

Jay and Laura Watson love pizza. The pair, who own and operate the 5,000 square foot Lamppost Pizzeria (located in the Damonte Ranch Town Center near RC Willey), have a vision for their beloved establishment and are thrilled to be celebrating their 1 Year Anniversary this Saturday, November 22 from 11am -11pm. The event will feature buy one/get one free drink specials, live music from the group Flashback, their always extensive menu of proprietary delights, and the family friendly atmosphere that makes Lamppost Pizza one of the most unique restaurants in town.

Lamppost Pizza has arguably the best pizza in Northern Nevada. The secret sauce recipe is standout and the crust is light, crisp and full of flavor. My group recently sampled one of their thin-slice Chicken Pesto pizzas (something the cook whipped up for us to try) with garlic ranch sauce baked in and it was heavenly. The Reno Passport team visited the pizzeria and enjoyed favorites like their Pepperoni pizza, Taco pizza, the four meat Linebacker pizza and their delicious Hawaiian Pizza.

What sets Lamppost apart is the daring experimental nature of their offerings and the freshness of their ingredients. Owner Jay Watson started throwing pie dough at age 14 at one of the Orange County, California Lamppost Pizza locations. You can taste the difference that experience makes. In a December ‘07 interview with the Reno Gazette Journal, just after the grand opening of their South Reno restaurant, Watson stated, “I ran three of them (franchises) through high school and college, and I always knew I’d have one someday.” The Watson’s pizza savvy has led them to create some unlikely hits, like their breakfast pizza and dessert pies. I was initially doubtful that a dessert pizza would work–until I tried the Cinnamon dessert pizza with crispy crust topped with icing: it was amazing! Watson and his wife also make a killer Apple Strudel pizza with apple topping, sliced almonds and vanilla glaze. Cap off a fun family outing with one of these unique dessert pizzas.

Patrons can get their gaming on playing one of Lamppost’s ten Game King video poker/slot machines. Parents can enjoy premium beers and top shelf cocktails, while their kids play arcade games like Crazy Taxi, Pirates Chest, Wacky Gator, Target Terror Gold, or Spider Man pinball in Lamppost’s lively game room. Of special note to sports fans, Lamppost features ten 42-inch television screens throughout the restaurant and bar. Sunday morning football die-hards can sit at the full bar and enjoy a “Hard Arnold Palmer” made with Ketel Citreon, iced tea and a splash of lemonade for just $3.25. Mimosa’s are also $3.25 and Bloody Mary’s are $3.25 well; Bloody Mary w/Absolute Peppar is $3.75. Lamppost’s Sunday NFL game beer specials are a must: 2 for 1 on pints and pitchers of Bud & Coors Light. The fully stocked bar also has tall cans of Buckbean Brewery’s Black Noddy and the local brewery’s famous Orange Blossom Ale is on tap.

Lamppost Pizza offers fast free delivery to nearby residents in South Reno’s Double Diamond community and free delivery within a 5-mile radius of their Steamboat Parkway location. Check out Reno’s best pizza at Lamppost Pizzeria and catch their live music programming starting in January 2009. If you haven’t been to Lamppost, stop by for a visit this Saturday as the restaurant celebrates their 1 Year Anniversary, with music, drink specials and a great family atmosphere.

Now that mass excavation and much of the concrete work is complete, construction crews continue on the quest to complete the 10,000-capacity Reno Aces stadium. Purchasing structural steel from across the nation, erection commenced on Oct. 27 and plans for the main stadium and suite structures will approach completion by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Construction of outfield scoreboard and signage structures will take place through December and January along with the receipt of roofing on all concrete masonry unit buildings. And while massive construction takes place outdoors, Devcon subcontractors act quickly to complete design-build projects in keeping with the ongoing stadium design.

“We’re very pleased with the progress on the stadium,” said Stuart Katzoff, managing partner of the Reno Aces. “The steel is going up quickly and before you know it we’ll be installing seats and laying sod. Devcon has done an excellent job of keeping the stadium on track and I look forward to cutting the ribbon on Reno’s first Triple-A baseball stadium this spring.”

Tour de Fat, New Belgium Brewing’s traveling celebration of all things bicycle, has passed the $1 million mark in money raised for non-profit organizations. The eleven 2008 Tour de Fat (www.tour-de-fat.com) stops raised more than $250,000, making the grand total $1,015,196 for the nine years of the cycling circus. Tour de Fat spreads the good word about the myriad benefits of cycling, while promoting sustainability and folly.

“The cycling celebration we’ve created has turned into a movement to get people to pedal more, drive less and help out our non-profit friends,” said Chris Winn, Tour de Fat’s coordinator and event evangelist. “This year we had more bike parade participants than ever before and more than 1.5 million miles pledged through Team Wonderbike. We are witnessing a nationwide paradigm shift, with people now looking at the bike as a transportation alternative in addition to everyone’s favorite form of recreation.”

Tour de Fat includes costumed bike parades, non-stop crowd-pleasing entertainment, contests of bicycle skill and precision (e.g. the “Slow-Down or Throw-Down” competition) and rideable art bikes. Tour de Fat also includes car-for-bike swappers, who commit to live car free for a year. In exchange for their vehicle, the Car-for-Bike Trade participants receive a hand-built commuter bike. By pledging to bike instead of driving, the volunteers commit to pedaling to work, pedaling out to dinner and even pedaling to get groceries. To see the Car-for-Bike Trade ceremonies from Tour de Fat stops and read and watch the swapper applications, go to www.tour-de-fat.com.

“This was our second year for the car-for-bike swap and it’s always a kick to see the enthusiasm our swappers have about turning over the keys and starting a new journey on a bike,” continued Winn. “They all have incredible stories and serve as an inspiration.”

To help spread the bicycling culture, Tour de Fat’s Team Wonderlounge offers a place to sign up for Team Wonderbike (www.teamwonderbike.com), New Belgium’s bicycling commuter advocacy program, where people pledge to commute by bike as often as possible. At the 2008 Tour de Fat stops, bikers pledged not to drive 1.49 million miles in the next twelve months.

Tour de Fat is free to participants, but beer and merchandise proceeds go to local cycling non-profits. This philanthropic cycling circus has helped dozens of non-profit organizations since 2000 and has now raised more than $1 million. In addition to raising money, Tour de Fat seeks to leave as small an environmental imprint as possible and composts and recycles waste from each tour stop. Tour de Fat 2008 had a waste diversion rate of 91 percent, up from last year’s rate of 83 percent. Tour de Fat also tours with a solar-powered stage for musical acts, uses biofuel that is sourced from recycled waste oils for trucks and transport, and has all vendors operate off the grid.

“It was another record-breaking year and magnificent to see so many people come out to support the best invention on earth, and learn about more ways we all can all make a difference,” said Winn. “We look forward to next year, but until then, enjoy the winter and don’t stop pedaling!”

Reno Passport would like to welcome the newest bar to Reno, The Saint James Infirmary. The new spot is located on California Avenue just east of Arlington Avenue, across the street from LIV boutique. Reno Passport got a sneak peek tour of the venue with Owner by Arthur Farley and Managed by Zak Girdis. The inside of the bar is dark and has a similar feel as the Chapel Tavern in midtown. The St. James Infirmary will be a great addition to the Cal Ave bar scene.

The management team is trying to avoid targeting a demographic. They want St. James Infirmary to be a neighborhood bar with a diverse crowd. During the walk-through yesterday Farley and Girdis told Reno Passport that they hope to have all City of Reno building department permits in hand this week. The Saint James Infirmary is hoping for a soft opening later this week, which will be followed by a media opening and then a Grand Opening for the public in early to mid December. The owners are excited to be a part of the scene development in downtown Reno. The Saint James Infirmary will be a nice complement to the constant revitalization process occurring in downtown and adjacent neighborhoods.

Reno Passport welcomes the Saint James Infirmary to the Cal Ave neighborhood, which gives us another bar to frequent that is walking distance from the Reno Passport headquarters. Look for the detailed article in Reno Passport Magazine. Check out the upper deck, watch out Silver Peak on wonder street, here comes another great roof top view. By Steve White

Reno Passport blew it up with local celebrities/scene builders including: Metaphysical, DJ Femur, Dan Adams, Mel KRZQ, Joe Snider (aka Spider, owner of the overkill Limo and partybus, Shone and Georgette (bohocrush), Christophe, Carrissa and Ivy (Reno News & Review), Meagan (Vista Grille), Leah Chubb, DJ Psilogod, Phillip Brown, Chris (Designer of Hot Shot the Robot), Sarah Hardy, and of course The Rhino.

Thank you to the ten99 and all of the event organizers. If you have photos from the Pink Party please submit them to info@renopassport.com and we will publish them online.

Don’t miss the New Years Eve party at The Underground produced by Champagne & Bacon, Bohoburlesque and Reno Passport. The NYE Party features internationally recognized DJs Freq Nasty and David Starfire, Gooferman and many other local acts. Click here to see the event details. Stay in Reno for New Years this year. Rumor has it that local hip hop scene builder Metaphysical is putting together a project for the year end event.

Detour: Thunder Mountain Monument

For 40 years, the Thunder Mountain Monument, cobbled out of rusty cars, bottles, and eroding statues, has survived like a bizarre mirage beside I-80. A man known as Chief Rolling Thunder built this 80-foot junk-art monument in 1968 with two goals in mind: to illustrate the plight of the Native Americans and to make an ecological statement.

Born Frank Van Zant, this former police officer and WWII vet reinvented himself in his latter years, and moved his new bride and 3 young children to the side of the highway in Imlay, NV, a remote 120 east of Reno, to spend his retirement scavenging the desert and building Thunder Mountain out of man’s trash.

Eldest son Daniel Van Zant, a man of 22 at the time, recalls his father working from daylight till dark to construct the monument. He says many hippies also gravitated to Thunder Mountain in the 60’s and 70’s to help with the construction.

“I thought he’d slipped a cog for sure. (I’d say) ‘Why do you want to do this? This is a lot of work. Most people retire and play golf, go fishing,” recalls Van Zant, caretaker and owner of Thunder Mountain since his father’s 1989 death.

Van Zant says his father had no more than a quarter of Creek ancestry but had always been passionate for Native American culture. He told some that an old medicine woman predicted he would build Thunder Mountain. To others, he said an eagle had instructed him to ‘build a nest’ in a dream.

“He was a pretty good story-teller. I never knew how much to believe. I don’t know how much he believed,” says Van Zant, who admits he didn’t initially share his father’s enthusiasm for the monument.

After Chief Rolling Thunder’s death, many encouraged Van Zant to maintain the property. Despite the 5-hour commute, Van Zant and his wife Margie have spent most vacations and many weekends during the past 20 years working on the restoration, paid for out of pocket and by private donation. Ultimately, the Van Zants hope to see the monument taken over by a group and preserved for posterity.

“I understand {now} what he was trying to do,” he explains. “It was definitely a Holocaust. There was a deliberate attempt to wipe out the Indian culture. He wanted to build something that people could be reminded,” says Van Zant.

“We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobile rather than by the quality of our service and relationship to humanity.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.

The economic crisis is affecting everybody. Gas and food prices are high, and the nation’s morale seems to be low. Rates of unemployment and homelessness are up all over the country, with one of the most publicized issues right here in Reno. We may complain about the price of gas but there are many people in our community who don’t even have the luxury of food or shelter. It is times like this, when we feel we don’t have much to give, that it’s most important to help others in need by giving what we can. There are many ways to help those among us who are less fortunate.

Food Bank of Northern Nevada 775.331.3663
The FBNN is expecting to provide over 500,000 meals to Northern Nevadans in need this Thanksgiving season. Even small contributions make a big difference – a gift of eleven dollars can equal 44 meals for hungry people. To learn more about the Food Bank of Northern Nevada or make a donation online visit www.fbnn.org

St. Vincent’s Center 500 E. Fourth Street 775.322.7073
Volunteers play a crucial role in St. Vincent’s programs and are always welcome. Donations of warm clothing or household goods to St. Vincent’s thrift shop or food to the pantry will help feed and clothe thousands of needy families this holiday season.
