Johnno Lazetich and his wife, Jamie Cooper-Lazetich are the creators of the Golden Gate Dream, which will be bridging the gap between theme camps at Burning Man this year. Like conventional bridges, the Golden Gate Dream is constantly evolving. Unlike the majestic San Francisco bridge for which it was named, however, this bridge doesn’t stay in one place for very long.

After attending Burning Man for the first time, Cooper-Lazetich (aka Miss Cooper), told her husband that she wanted two things the following year: an RV and an art car. He had been to Burning Man seven times already and brushed off her enthusiasm as what seasoned Burners call “Second Year Syndrome” (when someone goes to Burning Man for the first time and leaves the playa with grandiose, seemingly impossible schemes for what they’re going to create next year). She was undeterred, and a short time later, the couple acquired a donated vehicle from a friend. The Golden Gate Dream would soon become reality.

The husband and wife team are a handsome couple, and their varied common interests reflect their creative compatibility. They work together, dj together, and build bridges together. Lazetich, or DJ Rhino, grew up in Reno and went to school at Oregon State and Kansas State, where he played football in college. It was in Kansas in the late ‘90’s that he immersed himself in the burgeoning underground electronica scene. Enamored with its culture and music, he learned how to dj.

His name, DJ Rhino, was a nickname given to him by his college buddies. Lazetich has narcolepsy, a condition that is marked by excessive, daytime sleepiness. When his friends would wake him up, they likened his gruff reaction to that of waking a sleeping rhino. The name stuck, and now it is both his dj and playa name.

The couple is as mobile in real life as they are on the Playa. Right now, they’re on tour. The mobile party is called The Bud Light Great American Summer No-Town Tour.

“No-town,” says Cooper-Lazetich. “Where nobody tells you no.”

Many djs who they admire tour frequently, and they decided that it was time to hit the road with their music. The joke is that besides playing at the Big Bounce music festival and Burning Man, they don’t leave Reno. Instead, they go to a different bar every month and throw a big party. The tour, which started in April and ends in November, is a quirky success.

“We go to random bars, we set up for one night only and we take over the bar with a monster sound system, Go-Go girls, disco balls and a full merchandise table,” exudes Lazetich. “We turn it into a club for one night only.” The entrepreneurial team contacted Budweiser, who loved the idea and quickly signed on as their sponsor.

The couple, in addition to their sizeable contribution to Reno’s music scene, works to promote awareness and revenue for local social causes. Lazetich is the cofounder of Battle of the Rattle, a race up Rattlesnake Mountain that benefits the Nevada Diabetes Association for Children and Adults. The annual event has raised nearly $100,000 for the nonprofit organization. This year’s upcoming race will take place on Sept. 25, and the funds will help send children with juvenile diabetes to camp in Lake Tahoe.

Whether it’s planning races, dj tours or the next, ambitious addition to the Golden Gate Dream, DJ Rhino and Miss Cooper are creating a sensation wherever they go. Although they don’t have a theme camp at Burning Man, their mobile bridge is easy to spot. You can enjoy their music on the Playa during a special appearance on Wednesday night at Reno on Fire presented by (BRC) Roots Society (look for the biggest white dome on the playa). You can also enjoy the pulsating, rhythmic beat of their music on their mutant vehicle- just look for the arching lights of the Golden Gate Dream. Hop on quick and pay the toll, because the bridge doesn’t stay put for long.

“The bridge,” Lazetich says, “Goes everywhere!”

Reno Passport and The Beach are proud to present Hydration, a music and art event that will take place at 9pm on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at The Beach at Grand Sierra Resort. Hydration is intended to be a staging area and meeting place for those heading out to the playa in 2010.
Smoove (NewsBreakz)

San Francisco scene builder Smoove emerged out of the 90’s drum ‘n bass scene in S.F. and quickly became a fixture of the underground Breakz circuit in 2001. These days, his signature mix of nu skool breakz, funk and electronic dance music can be heard every weekend all over San Francisco’s night life, from underground warehouse parties to his residencies at The End Up, 1015 and Mighty.

Jonboy (Dubalicious/Swag)

San Francisco-based Jonboy will perform at Hydration with a mix of Electro, Techno, House and Breaks. Since his early high school years at Chicago’s legendary Medusa’s nightclub, Jonboy has embraced all elemental sounds of electronic music. After moving to S.F., he has been exposed to the funky overtones of West Coast house that continue to shape his music today.

The Mener

The Mener is a Reno-based electronic dance music DJ who brings a mix of electronic house music with an occasional break beat and reggae track to keep the crowd hooked. The Mener performs at electronic dance music events throughout the region.

EJ Luera

Based out of Reno, EJ Luera is a DJ who has performed on just about every stage in town. EJ plays a variety of music, ranging from Hip Hop, Electronic Dance Music, House and Indie Rock.

Costumes and playa attire are strongly encouraged at Hydration. Presale tickets are available for $10 in Sparks at Prism Magic and in Reno at The Melting Pot World Emporium and Recycled Records. Tickets will be $15 at the door.
Welcome to the 8th incarnation of Opulent Temple. We have a new address this year at 2:00 & Baghdad. We create the space for sacred dance to world class music. We continue to output the intense effort it takes to do OT because we believe in the beauty and power of shared community in music and dance. Dance is the expression of the soul through movement. We invite you to express your soul amongst others bathed in big beats and fire light. We’re not all about the party. We hope you touch the part of you that inspires action and evolution in your life and sphere of influence. We aspire to open hearts and clear minds supported and surrounded by friendly freaks.

We hope you know camps like ours are entirely supported by the community and the camp members. We could use your help if you want to pitch in by donating. Every dollar counts (and we’ll send you live recordings from past years as a thank you.)

We also invite you to read some background on 2010 the line up if you want to learn more about how it comes together.

See you on the dancefloor !

Surrounded by music her entire life, Whitney has received formal vocal training and plays guitar and the keyboard, which is quite obvious when you see and hear her perform.

The band has recently released a new album entitled “Dream Killer,” which is inspired by the theme that we can sometimes be our own worst enemies by preventing our dreams and aspirations from becoming reality. The album is filled with songs that will take you on a soulful journey of popfunky tracks that are played by two of Reno’s most talented local music veterans: her father, Scott Myer, who plays guitar; and her uncle, Fred Myer, who plays the drums. Both her father and uncle previously toured with national bands No Doubt and Sublime. Vocals, of course, are belted by Whitney, a dynamic 23 year old whose colossal stage presence and vocal virility are somewhat surprising for her small size.

On Aug. 26th at 7pm, The Whitney Myer Band will be releasing their new album “Dream Killer” at the Knitting Factory with special guests Sturdy Beggars and The Charm of Hugo. The Whitney Myer Band will be donating half of their merchandise sales and all proceeds from ticket sales to the Northern Nevada International Center, a local non-profit organization that builds bridges of international awareness and understanding to promote the equality of all peoples.

Tickets can be picked up from the following locations: Java Jungle, The Melting Pot, Discology, Recycled Records, The Reno Bike Project, The Great Basin Brewery and Chapel Tavern. Tickets will also be at the door for $6 the night of the show.

Find and friend Whitney Myer on Facebook, and be sure to check them out on their MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/thewhitneymyerband).

RP Tip: Visit iTunes or CDbaby for a sneak peak of tracks from the new album.

It’s summer time, which means farmers’ markets time.

Nevada farmers come to market in August. The social impact of farmers’ markets is greater than most understand because there is no agenda and no shopping list. People see old friends and make new friends at markets. Shopping at a farmers’ market is a different type of shopping because it’s a social atmosphere. Even in this economy, people come to farmers’ markets.

Here’s a list by day of nearly every farmers’ market that operates in the area.

4056 Kietzke Ln. | Reno
775.828.0600 | http://Nevada.KelleyUSA.com
Hours: Mon-Sat 10am-6pm

When 15-year-old baseball player Cole Ferren picks up a Kelley baseball glove, he notices the dense and soft feel of the leather and how it forms nicely to his hand.
Ferren is comfortable with the feel, and that’s why he’s purchased Kelley Athletic Co. gloves for three years.

“It breaks in really quickly, and it stays in the shape you want for a really long time,” said Ferren, who has two infielder’s gloves and a first baseman’s glove from Kelley. “I’ve had mine for two or three years, and it’s still in the same shape since I bought it.”

That’s just one description from one of Stew Colton’s customers. Colton, a former baseball coach at Reno High and the University of Nevada, opened up the 1,400-square-foot Kelley store in Reno three years ago. He started as a sales rep in 1997 for Kelley and has been providing local youth and adults with baseball and softball gear ranging from bats and gloves to uniforms.

“It’s everything you would need for baseball or softball,” Colton said. “Bats, gloves, batting gloves, catcher’s gear, travel bags, belts, socks, helmets, you name it. That’s kind of the niche were in for kids of all ages in little league and up to college.”

In addition, the store also has an indoor batting cage with full instruction, which is a nice resource for practice when the unpredictable northern Nevada weather strikes. The facility has three pitching machines, fitted for both baseball and softball, costing $35 for half an hour and $45 for an hour. The facility also offers instruction from former professionals Todd Coburn, Bob Ayrault, Juan Thomas, Brent Kordel and Dan Serafini. To train with those professionals costs $40 for a half-hour and $60 for an hour.

Kelley also has a program where customers can purchase its Infuego bat, then trade it in for a new bat for $100 within 12 months. Colton said some kids buy bats fit for Babe Ruth league, then trade it in within a year as they grow and get stronger or switch to a different league. With bats costing upwards of $350, the savings can be monumental. Colton said no other bat retailer has a trade-in program.

Colton also sponsors the Kelley Showcase, an all-star baseball game for senior high school baseball players in northern and southern Nevada. The event is in its 13th year and gathers college and pro scouts to view the local talent in the area. If not for this, some kids might not get any recognition.

“I thought if I kept putting on the showcase, it would become more known and more known and help some kids out,” said Colton, who provides all equipment for the players.

One of Reno’s favorite producers and DJs returns to Reno to play our city’s favorite new venue. FreQ Nasty, along with high-profile San Francisco producer an-ten-nae, Jackson Hole, WY’s top dj Cut La Whut?, and locals Coop da Loop and RandV play at WüRK on Saturday, August 14th. This all-star line-up will prove to be a night to remember at WüRK.

FreQ Nasty, since first playing here in February 2008 with Bassnectar, has consistently drawn record crowds to be a top performer in the area. Super heavy-basslines, exclusive tracks, infectious stage presence and a genre-blurring setlist has cemented him as a Reno favorite. Everyone now knows when FreQ Nasty comes to town, the room will be packed and the sound all-encompassing.

An-Ten-Nae aka Adam Ohana, is a SF-based producer responsible for some of the most historic events in the Bay Area. Making 103 Harriet (aka 1015 Folsom) his home, he’s been absolutely irreplaceable in showcasing talent from around the world to the rabid San Francisco audiophiles. His productions appearing on his self-curated “Acid Crunk” compilations on Muti Music have seen record sales to DJs and casual listeners alike. Blurring the line between dubby midtempo, dubstep and crunk, an-ten-nae’s first play in Reno in over one year is highly anticipated.

The most infamous DJ to come out of Jackson Hole, WY, Cut La Whut? will be dropping some incredible midtempo, hip hop, soul and breaks to Reno’s ears. Recently joining Canadian label Homebreakin’ Records, Cut has been featured at the Shambhala and Big Bounce Music Festivals two years running.

Music at WüRK starts at 10pm with Coop da Loop and RandV supporting. Wishing Kristi Hall a very happy birthday on this day as well. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at door. Tickets are available at The Melting Pot World Emporium, WüRK and www.initcketing.com. 21+.

The Mark Sexton Band’s New Album

Mark Sexton’s passion for the sound and dedication of soul singers from past and present is evident in “Listen Out,” the sophomore album that raises the bar from the group’s last work on “Multiformity.” The songwriting, harmony and foundation all have seemed to fall right into place with this latest release. The band’s latest musical creation urges their audience to stop hearing music and to start listening to music.

Because of the live studio recording done in Seattle, Wash., this album is as alive with passion and feeling as it should be. The construction of this performance has been two years in the making and has been well worth it. The patience put forth into this album collectively by the band is completely audible, and you can hear the work of art within this album.

The Mark Sexton Band has led the way in further innovating the sounds of soul and reggae since 2006. The depth and body of the group’s work stems from their deep understanding of music and the message that it bears. The Mark Sexton Band flexes a significant message in their music: pure emotion and love. This group takes pride in the production of their sound, leaving no room for artificial feeling or contrived songwriting.

It’s clear The Mark Sexton Band doesn’t think twice when it comes to writing from the heart. Ignoring short-lived musical trends, the sounds from this group move on to see something more meaningful. Three full tours across the entire west coast speak volumes about the band’s musicianship and dedication to spreading their music and message. The success from their travels let the music speak for itself to all who witnessed their performances. Seeing albums find new homes at every show has pushed this dynamic group to new heights.

With the band’s potential hardly even tapped, this is truly a group you do not want to lose sight of. Listening to “Listen Out” will show you why. You can catch their CD release show at The Nugget Celebrity Showroom on Thur., Aug. 19 at 7pm. Find them online at http://marksextonband.com and http://myspace.com/marksextonreno.

Free Art exhibit showcases the whimsical and humorous take on America’s pop culture icons. Local artist, land architect and designer Kevin McCall will hold a special 2-day art installation, August 19th and 20th in the brand new East of West Art Gallery. During the last 12 months McCall has created 33 unique and eclectic pieces of work that will be showcased during this symbolic exhibit. The exhibit is free to the public and will offer light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist.
Kevin McCall a Kansas City native moved from the New York City area 18 years ago to live, work and play in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area. The installation will express the symbolic side of Americas pop culture. “My body of work is on the larger size, with strong geometry, symbolism, color and usually humor, each piece tells a short story.” McCall says.
This brightly colored and intriguing exhibit will feature images from the Post-World War II American culture. “You’ll be surprised and intrigued by his whimsical and humorous take on America’s symbols and icons of pop culture,” states Marilyn Strauss, owner of the Sulgrave in Kansas City. You will be inspired by the nostalgic images of Olive Oil, Walt Disney, Tom Hanks and much more. “Usually each piece takes more than 10 seconds to really, “get it”’, because most pieces have multiple images within them. Smiles and laughing is a common reaction”, says McCall.
The event will be featured at the new East of West Art Gallery, located in the West Street Market at 148 West Street Reno, NV. Thursday August 19th and Friday August 20th from 5pm-9pm.
For more information call Kevin Mcall at 775-247-2081 visit the website http://www.mccallpopart.com or e-mail kmccall.sierraland@yahoo.com

We just installed a TurboKOOL unit in our 1963 Alladin Trailer, and it is awesome. This will be our first year at burning man with a swamp cooler. It draws off of our 12 V system that is awesome, so we don’t need to run the generator all the time.

Stay KOOL with TurboKOOL, a 12-volt battery or solar-powered (solar panel not included) evaporative cooling system (swamp cooler) for recreational vehicles like yours. Its quiet spin-spray cooling technology is the first successful, trouble-free and economical evaporative cooling system of its type for RVs. TurboKOOL is ideally suited for the “Burning Man” experience.

Hot, dirty air becomes clean, cool air as the spin-spray action washes out dust, pollen and impurities. TurboKOOL reduces the indoor air temperature from 15 to 30 degrees. This feature-packed roof-mounted unit fits all standard 14” x 14” RV roof vents and delivers up to 750 CFM of cool, clean air while only drawing 4.6 amps.

Weighing only 16 lbs. and measuring 35” x 22” x 11.5”, TurboKOOL is compact and easy to install by the “do-it-yourselfer” with our easy-to-follow instructions.

TurboKOOL is available directly from the manufacturer Bachman Enterprises, Inc. in Gardnerville, Nevada. 1-800-326-4410 or www.TurboKOOL.com

If this sounds like your key to “Burning Man” comfort, call Ben Bachman at the number above, he will be glad to help you price and order a unit. There is still time to have a TurboKOOL installed on your space ship before your “Burning Man” adventure begins.

It’s not cool…. It’s TurboKOOL!

775.322.2710 | http://275hill.com
Hours: Mon-Fri 10:30am-10pm | Sat-Sun 9:00am-10pm
A visit to 275 Hill offers a distinctly unique dining experience that is changing the flavor of local cuisine. Wild game such as elk, antelope, venison and duck are integrated with local produce to create a truly innovative and ever-changing menu. The daily specials even regularly offer meats as unusual as python, shark, rattlesnake and camen, depending on what Head Chef Mauricio Palacios can get his hands on.
Palacios is a self-admitted nonconformist who is consistently driven to create new and exciting dishes and encourages patrons to try something they’ve never had before.
“Open your mind and think outside the box,” Palacios encourages. “You can eat steak anywhere. I only have chicken on the menu because I have to.”
275 Hill works closely with local farmers to offer the best in seasonal produce, beef, and poultry, as well as countrywide with hunters and fishmongers to bring in the array of exotic meats and seafood. The game meats are free range and produced without hormones, and the seafood is ocean-caught. In order to provide the freshest product possible, these orders are sent directly to the restaurant overnight.
“The neat thing about my seafood is that it was in the ocean yesterday,” Palacios says.
The variety of local ingredients not only stimulates the local economy but also helps keep costs down, and these benefits are passed on to customers. Owner Brett Rosselli opened with the inspiration to offer a unique and cutting-edge dining experience within an accessible price rage, making 275 Hill an affordable indulgence.
“By featuring a chef-driven menu and using local ingredients, we are able to change the menu based on what’s available,” Rosselli said. “In July, we get those beautiful heirloom tomatoes, so we’ll have an heirloom tomato salad on the menu.”
Palacios also expects shark, mountain goat and wild turkey to be among July’s menu items and muses that he may get reindeer during the holidays.
The unconventional menu isn’t the only interesting characteristic of 275 Hill. They have a spacious patio, full bar and offer 400 different wine labels that are stored in a cellar located underground in a converted bomb shelter. A rotating collection of art decorates the inside walls, and local musician Stevie Bradford provides live entertainment showcasing blues and classic rock hits on Sunday and Monday nights.
275 Hill is open for lunch and dinner on weekdays and starts offering brunch at 9am on the weekends. For more information, visit them online at http://275hill.com, where you can get links to their Facebook and Twitter pages and can subscribe to their newsletter for special events and discount coupons.

Possible breakout info: Chef Palacios recommends the antelope. “It’s the best tasting meat I’ve ever had.” Owner Rosselli recommends the duck confit, a classic French dish that’s hard to find in town.
