Local Business Review Buckbean Brewery

Reno local launches package brewery for beer starved Northern Nevada. Buckbean Brewery invited Reno Passport to their VIP Pre-Opening Party on April 11 to see the brewery up close. We entered Buckbean Brewery through their small but quaint tasting room. Beyond the tasting room you can’t miss the large industrial steel brewery equipment, kind of reminded me of the movie Strange Brew, eh.

According to our conversations with the owners, they have no intention of opening a taphouse anytime soon. However, you will be able to enjoy their crafted beers at local bars, restaurants, grocery stores and golf courses soon. Owners Doug Booth and veteran brewmaster Daniel B. Kahn are busy brewing and planning their distribution network, which focuses on Washoe, Carson City, and Douglas Counties. Daniel Kahn was the brewmaster for the Riverside Brewing Company, in my hometown of Riverside, CA. Kahn is producing two beers for the initial opening of the Brewery; Orange Blossom Ale and Black Noddy Lager. Buckbean packages their beer in 16 oz. cans, kegs and growlers. http://www.buckbeanbeer.com/

RP Tip: Did you know that Buckbean Brewery has green plastic kegs? Plastic kegs have been in use in the UK for over 5 years.

What’s in the name Buckbean Anyways? I asked owner Doug Booth, who said that Buckbean takes its name from the buckbean plant, an herb that grows in the Tahoe Meadows. Buckbean was a traditional substitute for hops in brewing beer. Daniel plans to use buckbean in crafting some of his specialty releases.
