Nada Motel Local Art Show

An un-staged art event in its second year;
a.k.a. “the art show that changes its name each year”,
is again ‘celebrating Reno’s unlimited potential for absurdity’…
…and is being held
June 26th–29th, 2008 (Thursday through Sunday)
Hours: Noon to Midnight-individual room times may vary,
Posters at each location will list all participating rooms.
All 4 nights, 21 & over entertainment in the Cortez’ Trocadero Lounge a.k.a. “The Cock Fight Club”
It’s a BYOB party with DJs, bands and entertainment surprises like
martial arts demonstrations, fire dancers, puppeteers, neon and roosters, lots of roosters.
Hotel El Cortez and Town House Motorlodge
both at 2nd St. & Arlington, downtown Reno Nevada
Free to the public
50 artists have already filled 40 motel rooms with art.
Their work will be on display for the public until check-out.
Last year sculptors, painters, photographers, printmakers and performance artists hosted their own works in these rooms. This year the art ranges from the abstract to the real and unreal.
Most participating artists set up studio in Reno, some hail from CA, LV and Washington. An event like this happened last year assuming the name Dada Motel. To reinforce the newness, each year the name changes. We used the line “get a room, make a show” to reinforce the idea that the artists are promoting themselves on their own dime, we’ve just agreed upon the dates. As arts funding dwindles in public institutions, we’re in critical times for education and appreciation of creativity. We hope that this event brings back a feeling that it’s in our own hands. We’re proud to say that this is an artist-run event.
Did you attend Dada Motel last year? Do you think it connects better with local artists than Artown?

My daughter, son, and I went last year and loved it. As an artist, I really appreciate the creative venue chosen to display the various art and artists. I heard the cockroaches at night were a little unnerving though.

If I recall, almost three floors were utilized as galleries, with an eclectic mix of art. The artists were available for discussion. Art also took places in other areas of town as well. The decor of El Cortez just added to the experience. 1960’s and 1970’s orange and brown type decor, and thick ugly walls.
