Creative Living/Home Arts Contests and 4-H Livestock Shows
Creative Living/Home Arts competitions can be found at the 2008 Nevada State Fair. This year the State Fair received over 1400 Creative Living/Home arts entries. The two most entered categories were photography and fine arts which includes oil painting and watercolor. In the Junior division there were 398 entries including hands-on demonstrations and science exhibits. Favorite entries include homemade wine making and wine labels, quilting, photography, floral arranging, arts and crafts, baking and recipe contests, canning, homegrown fruits/vegetables, table setting, preserved fruit, marmalades, jams, jellies and more! C & H Sugar Company will award prizes in the baked foods and confections category, such as cakes, loaves, pound cake, cookies and layer cakes. Entrants will have one hour to make and bake the confections in the Nevada State Fair’s “Bake Off Kitchen,” located in the main Exhibit Hall. Ribbons, cash prizes and bragging rights will be awarded to winners. Additional exhibits and competitions include woodworking, CAD design and electronics, entomology, forestry, conservation, geology, jewelry, needlework, sewing, ceramics, pottery, science exhibits, and Legos.
The State Fair also offers some great food competitions. Judges will be tasting and scoring the best Mexican dish, Apple pie, berry pie, exotic pie, salsa, Basque dish, cheesecake, pasta and use of chocolate in a dessert. See schedule below for dates and times of food contests.
There are over 2600 entries this year in large and small animal livestock shows, from rabbits to lambs to horses. Come support our hard working local youth in Nevada 4-H and FFA by joining in the bidding at the Silver Dollar Youth Livestock Show & Sale. All information about the 4-H and FFA shows is featured in the Livestock portion of the Competition handbook. Youth events range from small animal shows to breeding beef, sheep, swine and goats for market. There are a number of Open Shows also planned.
